Brief Biography of the Author
Kurt Vonnegut, who was born in 1922, is considered one of the most influential American authors in history. He used science fiction complete with unusual characters, humor, and literature to make social commentary. After studying at Cornell from 1940 to 1942, he enlisted in the army. He was sent to study at what would later become Carnegie Mellon University. In 1944, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and then was captured as a prisoner of war. Vonnegut was in an underground meat locker making vitamins in Dresden, Germany, during the Allied firebombing. He survived by chance and saw the destruction caused by it. After the war, he got married and had three children. He later adopted his sister's three children after her death. Vonnegut died on August 11, 2007.
